OVERVIEW

Kuroko Tetsuya is the protagonist of the series and the passing specialist for Seirin High. Known as the legendary Phantom Sixth Man of Teikō Junior High's Generation of Miracles, Kuroko has light blue hair, a small build, and an unusually weak physical presence that allows him to slip across the court virtually unnoticed.

Quiet, polite, and deeply devoted to team play, Kuroko weaponizes his lack of presence through his signature technique, Misdirection. By diverting the opponent's attention away from himself, he acts as Seirin's ultimate "Shadow," directing the flow of the game with lightning-fast passes, deceptive drives, and unique shots to lift his team—and his "Light"—to victory.

NAME ETYMOLOGY

Kuroko (黒子): The kanji 黒 (Kuro) means "black" , alluding to his likeness to a shadow. While every Generation of Miracles member has a name matching their hair color, Kuroko's hair is light blue rather than black—a gag confirmed by Fujimaki-sensei in a manga Q&A. However, 黒子 (Kuroko) is also the term for traditional Japanese stagehands who dress in all-black to remain "invisible" to the audience, perfectly fitting his shadow-like presence.

Teikō Naming Pattern: Following a hidden theme where Teikō's core names are colors, Kuroko's is "black."

Tetsuya (テツヤ): Written in Katakana rather than Kanji, giving his name a modern, straightforward quality. Phonetically, Tetsu (哲) can signify "philosophy" or "clear-sightedness," pointing to his calm, deeply observant understanding of the game.

ICONIC QUOTES

"So long as I don't give up, the possibility of winning never drops to zero."

"Even if you have a higher score than your opponent when the final whistle blows, if there's no one happy, then what is victory?"

"The future? We'll worry about that once we get there."

Personal Quirks & Preferences As revealed in the Replace Plus side story, Kobe Bryant is his favorite basketball player, and unlike many of his peers, he doesn't have a favorite actress.
Scrapped Sibling Concept Author Tadatoshi Fujimaki revealed in the KuroFes databook that his biggest scrapped idea in the entire series was originally making Akashi and Kuroko brothers. This was why their hair styles were designed to look so similar. However, the idea was cancelled because Fujimaki felt it would blur their main goal—defeating the Generation of Miracles to become #1 in Japan—and turn the story into a melodramatic soap opera.

Source: Kuroko's Basketball Official Manga Q&A

Q1: How do you spend your days off?

Kuroko: I often go to the library.

Q2: What got you into basketball?

Kuroko: I saw it on TV and thought it would be interesting.

Q3: Who in the Generation of Miracles are you closest to?

Kuroko: Aomine-kun.

Q4: For that matter, who in the Generation of Miracles do you dislike the most?

Kuroko: Midorima-kun.

Q5: What's your favorite memory from middle school?

Kuroko: When we went to the school festival.

Q6: Who are you closest to on your current team?

Kuroko: Kagami-kun.

Q7: What's your type?

Kuroko: A kind person.

Q8: What do you enjoy most, besides basketball?

Kuroko: I enjoy reading.

Q9: What are you bad at?

Kuroko: It's a bit hard to liven up the place or say something interesting.

Q10: What is basketball to you?

Kuroko: It's hard, but it's more fun than anything else.

OFFICIAL KUROFES INTERVIEW (VOL. 1)

Source: KuroFes Official Fanbook

Q1. You'll be interviewing a lot of people today - please tell us how you're feeling about it. [In the Kurofes fanbook, Kuroko interviewed characters who placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in their position poll.]

Kuroko: This is my first time acting as an interviewer, but I'll do my best.

Q2. What do you consider your greatest strength?

Kuroko: I think I have a fair amount of patience.

Q3. So, is there anything you'd like to improve about yourself going forward?

Kuroko: I've been told I don't say enough, so I want to try to be more proactive about expressing myself in words.

Q4. Who is the person you least want to lose to?

Kuroko: I don't really focus on winning or losing on an indiviual level, but as a team, we want to give it our all to win every match.

Q5. Looking back on the Winter Cup, how do you feel now?

Kuroko: I was so happy - you could say it was the happiest I've ever been. (laughs)

Q6. Did you have any further conversation with Ogiwara-san afterwards?

Kuroko: We talked a little about the past and the present. I apologised, but was told there was no need to. Also, since his email address had changed, we exchanged addresses again.

Q7. I understand that reading is a hobby of yours; could you tell me about any books or authors you've been enjoying lately?

Kuroko: I've been focusing on basketball recently, so I haven't really been reading much. I'd like to read a variety of things again once things settle down a bit.

Q8. What was the most interesting thing you observed about someone's mannerisms?

Kuroko: "Interesting" might not be the right word, but I was surprised to see Kagami-kun eat a cheeseburger in just about three bites - and he hardly chewed it either. I thought that was bad for his health, so I warned him about it.

Q9. Tell us about your goals moving forward

Kuroko: Of course, winning the Winter Cup doesn't mean we're done just because we've achieved our goal. If I'm going to do it, I intend to win, and I will give it my all and aim to be number one in Japan once again.

Q10. Please give a message to your fans.

Kuroko: Thank you all for your continued support. I look forward to doing my best - first as a shadow, and then as an interviewer - so I appreciate your support.

AUTHOR NOTES (FUJIMAKI-SENSEI)

Author's Memo "As the protagonist, this character holds a special place in my heart. My own ideas - my philosophy and values - are heavily reflected in him. Yet, for some reason, he is a troublesome character who is difficult to draw."
A Word from Fujimaki-sensei! "There's nothing to say. He's already my alter ego."
