OVERVIEW

Hyūga Junpei is the clutch shooting guard and dependable captain of Seirin High. Sporting short dark hair, glasses, and a stern expression, Hyūga is the pillar of leadership for the team, balancing his administrative duties as team captain with his role as Seirin's primary perimeter scoring threat.

Though usually calm and collected off the court, Hyūga undergoes a dramatic personality shift during high-stakes game moments, becoming fierce, sharp-tongued, and exceptionally confident. Renowned for his clutch three-point shooting and signature moves like the Barrier Jumper, he thrives under pressure, consistently knocking down crucial baskets when his team needs them most.

NAME ETYMOLOGY

Hyūga (日向): The kanji 日 (Hyu / Hi) means "sun" or "day," while 向 (Ga / Muka) means "facing," "towards," or "direction." Together, 日向 translates to "a sunny place" or "facing the sun."

Seirin Naming Pattern: Following a hidden theme where Seirin's core roster members feature a day of the week in their surnames, Hyūga's first kanji represents Sunday (日曜日, Nichiyōbi), symbolizing the sun and completing the 7-day calendar set alongside his teammates.

Junpei (順平): The kanji 順 (Jun) means "order" or "favorable," and 平 (Pei) means "flat" or "peaceful." This reflects his calm, composure off the court prior to his fierce competitive mode during games.

Ironclad Attendance Record Along with point guard Izuki Shun, Hyūga is one of only two Seirin players to participate in every single official match showcased throughout the series.

Fear of the Supernatural As revealed in the light novel series Kuroko no Basuke -Replace-, Hyūga has a deep-seated dread of ghosts—a fear largely stemming from Izuki constantly scaring him with ghost stories.

OFFICIAL KUROFES INTERVIEW

Source: KuroFes Official Fanbook  |  Interviewer: Kuroko Tetsuya

Q1: [Appearing suddenly out of nowhere] Hyuga-kun, congratulations on taking third place [in the shooting guard poll]. How do you feel right now?

Hyuga: Whoa! (Shoving Kuroko) Don't scare the hell outta me, you moron! I took third place right after Midorima and Himuro, right? I'd say that's a pretty damn good result.

Q2: What do you think is your greatest strength?

Hyuga: My greatest strength... that's a tough one! ... Well, for starters... Leading and uniting the team as a captain. I can't beat coach, though.

Q3: So, is there anything you would like to improve upon in the future?

Hyuga: I'd really like to fix my tendency to get a bit too nervous when it actually counts.

Q4: Who is the opponent you hate losing to the most?

Hyuga: I'm conscious of all shooters, but especially Mibuchi. We faced off in the final, too, though personally, the outcome felt a bit inconclusive.

Q5: Looking back at the Winter Cup, how do you feel now?

Hyuga: I was really happy about it. I managed to keep my promise to Kiyoshi, after all. And I avoided having to confess naked to my crush.

Q6: What was the hardest part about being captain?

Hyuga: Looking after the younger members once they joined. Especially you and Kagami - honestly!

Q7: So, be honest... what's up between you and the coach?

Hyuga: W-what are you talking about? There's nothing going on! I mean, what do you mean "what's up"? Coach is just... coach, you know?

Q8: Why did you - who used to be so moody - become interested in Sengoku warlord figures?

Hyuga: The warlords who lived through that era - they all fought with their lives on the line. They were real mean, you know? Any guy would look up to that, right? I mean everyone's always going on about Nobunaga, but first off, during the Sengoku period, it started with the conflict involving Hosokawa Katsumoto and Yamana Mochitoyo, where... (continues to talk about the Sengoku period for an hour)

Q9: Please tell us your goals for the future.

Hyuga: It's not that I'm done with the Winter Cup or anything, but I really want to play in the Inter High. We've never played in it before, after all.

Q10: Please give a message to your fans.

Hyuga: Thanks for the support! Taking first place next time might be a tough ask, to be honest, but I'm not going to settle for this - I'll keep giving it my all, so please keep cheering for me!

AUTHOR NOTES (FUJIMAKI-SENSEI)

Author's Memo "This is just my own analysis, but in terms of words and actions, this character is probably the one who's most like me. That's why I'm so attached to him."
A Word from Fujimaki-sensei! "I don't know why, but I just love him. I can't help but want to put him in a game. He hits those three-pointers, too."
