OVERVIEW

Aida Riko is Seirin High's basketball coach, manager, and a second-year student. The daughter of trainer Aida Kagetora, she learned to read an athlete's body as raw numbers while hanging around his gym as a child.

She refused to join the club until Kiyoshi, Hyūga, and the others shouted their goal—to become number one in Japan—at the morning assembly. Her Analyser Eye ability lets her spot muscle imbalances at a glance, design brutal training menus, and call tactics mid-game. She is also infamous for cooking that is technically nutritious but completely inedible.

NAME ETYMOLOGY

Aida (相田): The kanji 相 (Ai) means "mutual" or "together," and 田 (Da) means "rice field." The "together" reading fits a coach whose job is to bind five players into one unit.

Riko (リコ): Written in katakana rather than kanji, giving her name a modern, punchy quality that matches her whistle-on-the-sideline energy.

OFFICIAL KUROFES INTERVIEW

Source: KuroFes Official Fanbook  |  Interviewer: Kuroko Tetsuya

Q1: [Appearing suddenly out of nowhere] Coach, congratulations on taking first place [in the coaches and managers poll]. How do you feel right now?

Riko: Waah! ...Ahhh, ugh! You gave me a fright. As for how I feel... I did it! I really did it! I finally beat that cheeky little brat!

Q2: What do you think is your greatest strength?

Riko: Hmm... I suppose my ability to take action.

Q3: So, is there anything you would like to improve upon in the future?

Riko: I really do want to improve my cooking skills a little more!

Q4: Who do you want to lose to the least?

Riko: As a woman, Momoi. As a coach, it's hard to say who's better... But I refuse to lose to Kaijō's coach!

Q5: Looking back at the Winter Cup, how do you feel now?

Riko: There are certainly things I regret and things we could have done better, but above all, the result was a championship victory! Right now, that joy is what matters most! I'm not a player, but even so, seeing everyone make it this far really moved me. I thought they did an amazing job.

Q6: Please tell us the appeal of developing players.

Riko: When a player becomes able to do something they couldn't do before, and I was able to help them achieve that, it makes me happy too. But, on the other hand, it's also possible for a player to struggle to improve because of something I did, so there's a fair amount of pressure that comes with it too.

Q7: Do you actually plan to study cooking?

Riko: I told you I will! Stop worrying about it so much! This is a book I bought recently: "For those of you who care about 'flavour'! The 20 Best-tasting Protein Dishes!"

Q8: We heard from Momoi-san's data that there's someone in the Seirin basketball club whom you're interested in...

Riko: W-wait... What is that girl saying?! That was just a figure of speech, or rather... She just went and interpreted it that way on her own!!

Q9: Please tell us your goals for the future.

Riko: There are various things, but the biggest one is winning the Inter High, I suppose. I know, of course, that it'll be difficult... So, Kuroko-kun... you'd better be prepared for the training from here on out, okay?

Q10: Please give a message to your fans.

Riko: Thank you everyone for your support! The players and I have different positions, but I think we have the same strength of feeling, so please continue to support us from here on out!

AUTHOR NOTES (FUJIMAKI-SENSEI)

Author's Memo "She's capable, but she is a high school girl. She doesn't command with the absolute authority of an adult. That's why she's called 'Kantoku' (coach). It's sort of a combination of a job title and a nickname."
A Word from Fujimaki-sensei! "Handling the proceedings, providing commentary, supporting the team, and so on - her presence was invaluable to the project. My only regret (sort of) is that she ended up becoming the heroine."
